First Week of Homeschooling

We just finished the first week of homeschooling with Lucy. I decided to go with an Arctic/Antarctic theme for the month of January. Lucy is learning to locate both places on a map and correctly identify some of the animals and where they live. I have these and these for Lucy to use along with some of these cards to help with animal identification.. I didn't print them all, just the ones I thought we would be most likely to use. I also used some of the penguin cards from here to create a matching game.

I set up an area in our computer room to be the school area.

This is a polar bear addition game. Lucy really loves this game and requests that we play it almost every day. I can't find the link, but I think I got it from Teachers Pay Teachers. Players roll two dice, add the numbers and place one of their game pieces(we used clear and blue stones) on the answer. The winner is the person who has the most game pieces on the board at the end.

This is a penguin game for counting by 10's It ends up this is a bit easy for Lucy so I think I'm going to print out the cards for counting by 5's.

Since Lucy is still struggling with rhyming we have been playing lots of rhyming games. This is a concentration game. I think I got this game from Teachers Pay Teachers too.

This is a puzzle that is put together by counting by 5's. This is a bit difficult for Lucy, but she can do it if I give her a little help.
The puzzles can be found here.

This is a penguin math game where Lucy looks at two numbers and then picks out the card that has the number that goes between.

We have had lots of cold weather this week and Lucy had fun going outside and finding ice to play with.

Our poem for the week comes from here.

For reading we are using All About Reading And for handwriting we are using A Beka.

I think our first week went pretty well. I am getting a better idea of exactly what Lucy's strengths are and her weak points. Her phonetic awareness is still very low for her age, so that is an area we need to really focus on.. In math she is able to do addition pretty well in her head so I think I'm going to go ahead and introduce subtraction.
